Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah passes away

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has died at age 90, state television reported early on Friday, and his brother Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz will succeed him as the new ruler of the world's top oil exporter.
King Salman, 79, immediately appointed his half-brother Muqrin as his crown prince and heir, a move seen to avert widespread speculation about the path of the royal succession.
State television said King Abdullah, who took power in 2005 after the death of his brother King Fahd, died of pneumonia. He was admitted to the hospital on December 31, state media reported at the time.
President Barack Obama expressed condolences and saluted the late king's commitment to close U.S.-Saudi ties.
"As a leader, he was always candid and had the courage of his convictions," Obama said in a statement. "One of those convictions was his steadfast and passionate belief in the importance of the U.S.-Saudi relationship as a force for stability and security in the Middle East and beyond."
"The closeness and strength of the partnership between our two countries is part of King Abdullah's legacy," the statement added.

The succession is largely expected to be smooth, as the Saudi royal family already announced in March that Salman would be next in line to the throne. But analysts say there could be implications for the oil markets.
Crude prices jumped after the news broke. U.S. benchmark WTI crude futures rose more than 2 percent to a high of $47.76 a barrel, while Brent crude futures rose as high as $49.80 a barrel.
"I think the problem for Saudi Arabia does not come from the domestic scene but instead comes from what's coming from around the region and of course the price of oil being as low as it is below $50 a barrel for them," said Firas Maksad, founder and managing director of Global Policy Advisors (GPA).
Saudi Arabia led OPEC's decision to maintain its production levels on November, triggering a further collapse in oil prices. Oil prices have plunged more than 50 percent since mid-2014, with Brent at $48.52 a barrel at Thursday's close, and Nymex crude trading at $47.62.
Weeks ago, when King Abdullah was reported to be seriously ill, Saudi watchers told CNBC that the country's oil, domestic and geopolitical policies should remain virtually unchanged when Salman takes over.
Salman, who has assumed many state duties while also serving as deputy prime minister and minister of defense, was relatively well-liked by regional neighbors and in Washington, according to Karen Elliott House, author of "On Saudi Arabia: Its People, Past, Religion, Fault Lines—and Future."
Abdullah, thought to have been born in 1923, had ruled Saudi Arabia as king since 2006, but had run the country as de facto regent for a decade before that after his predecessor, King Fahd, suffered a debilitating stroke.
Abdullah pushed cautious changes in the conservative Islamic kingdom including increased women's rights and economic deregulation, but made no moves towards democracy.
At stake with the appointment of Salman as king is the future direction of the United States' most important Arab ally and self-appointed champion of Sunni Islam, which has played a pivotal role in the messy aftermath of the Arab spring.
Abdullah played a guiding role in Saudi Arabia's support for Egypt's government after the military intervened in 2012, and drove his country's support for Syria's rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad.

B.S. Abdur Rahman University, passed away here on Wednesday at the age of 88.
Born in Kilakarai in a middle class family, he followed in his father’s footstep who was a pearl trader in South Asia. From trading in diamonds, he moved to education when he set up Crescent Engineering College in 1984. It was upgraded as B.S. Abdur Rahman University in 2009. “It was one of the first 10 self-financing engineering colleges to be set up in the State,” recalled S. Mohamed Tajuddin, Director of Placement.

Mr. Rahman is credited with launching 14 educational institutions and two orphanages. “He believed in empowerment of women through education. The Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women in Kilakarai, the Crescent School in Nungambakkam are examples of this,” said S. Prince Arockia Doss, director for International Collaboration at the University, who joined Crescent Engineering College in 1985 as a lecturer.

“He was an affectionate person who built people. The University is in the hands of qualified professionals as he promoted excellence. Our university has more women faculty than men,” Prof. Doss said.

Mr. Rahman has also left his imprint on Chennai’s landscape. His East Coast Constructions and Industries built the Gemini flyover and the lighthouse at the Marina beach. The company was also involved in the construction of Apollo Hospital on Greams Road, where he breathed his last, Mr. Tajuddin said. Mr. Rahman is survived by six children, including two daughters and four sons.

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET - JANUARY 2015

Posted on 16:02 by vikash gupta
CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

V.M. Khaleelur Rahman

Chennai leather market is slow as elsewhere in the country. Tanned goat skins Run, V and IF were sold at around Rs.90, 80 and 70 whereas suede and lining were sold at around Rs.49 and 47 per sq. ft. respectively. Some North Indian customers showed interest for Rejection and Langa at around Rs.30 and 25 per sq. ft. Availability of tanned goat skins is improved. Exporters are able to cover their requirements easily without much difficulty.

In wet blue cow hides demand is very limited and obtainable prices are much lower. The combined price for selections V, VI and VII available now is at around Rs.70 per sq. ft. instead of Rs.80 ruling earlier. Local tanners are somewhat alarmed. But as some shoe manufacturers have big contracts for shoes made out of this item, it is believed that market may recover and workable prices will be available for tanners. There is also report of prices of kip and calf skins coming down in many centres in the country.

Even in goat and sheep leathers business is slow and prices lower. Many tanners have either curtailed or stopped their purchases of raw skins with the result that raw skins are easily available.

Due to Christmas and new year holidays there is no report of any big overseas business. However some contracts  concluded for export in finished goat leathers were at almost unchanged prices – Upper, Suede and Lining leathers fetched at around US$2.50, 2.40 and 1.60 per sq. ft. respectively.
Business with Japan continues to be meagre at the present asking prices. Exporters are not able to reduce the prices due to unfavourable exchange rates of Japanese Yen. The business concluded for Japan is mostly in lower selections. There seems to be no takers for higher grades.

Hong Kong and Singapore customers are also not active in the market. Only patchy business is taking place. However leather products exporters are able to get good orders from their regular customers. They are also finding new customers for their products leather goods and shoes in different countries. One feels that the future is bright for leather products.

Exporters are quoting at around the following prices:
