CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET - OCTOBER 2014

Posted on 06:03 by vikash gupta

CHENNAI LEATHER MARKET

V.M. Khaleelur Rahman

Chennai leather market is normal. There is demand for various items of kip, calf, goat and sheep skins. Exporters of leather and leather products continue to buy tanned goat skins – 4/6 Suede at around Rs.48 and 4/6 Lining at around Rs.46 per sq. ft. and they pay about Rs. 2 higher for 5/7 in these selections. Run selections are sold at around Rs.80 per sq. ft. But there is no much demand for Rejection.  Some regular customers buy this item at prices ranging from Rs.27 to 30 per sq. ft. depending on the selection. Good Langda skins are sold at around Rs.20 per sq. ft.

Some transactions have also taken place in Lots (consisting of all sizes and selections without Langda) at around Rs.50 per sq. ft. But such transactions are rare.

At present tanners are quoting the following prices for their E.I. Tanned goat skins:
Run 5/7 sq. ft. Rs.85, 4/6 sq. ft. Rs.82 and R/V/IF Rs.70 per sq. ft.
All Suede: 5/8 sq. ft. Rs.52, 4/6 sq. ft. Rs.49, ABC Suede: 5/8 sq. ft. Rs.56 per sq. ft.
Lining: 5/8 sq. ft. TR1/2/3 Rs.50, TR1 Rs.52, 4/6 sq. ft. TR1/2/3 Rs.47, TR1 Rs.49 per sq. ft.

Wet blue cow hides are also in very good demand – ABC is sold at around Rs.120 and other grades like 5th, 6th and 7th fetch at around Rs.80, 70 and 60 per sq. ft. As higher grades are not easily available in the market, many exporters are importing this item from abroad.
It is reported that raw goat and sheep skins are in good demand. In raw centres like Vijayanagaram they are sold at around Rs.160 and 270 per piece respectively. In centres like Miraj prices are higher depending on the quality and selection.

Tanneries throughout Tamil Nadu are very cautious and restricting their soakings due to water scarcity and effluent problems. Tanning charges have gone up considerably.

As far as export is concerned, big product and leather units are able to conclude contracts with their regular customers. However it is not the case with the small exporters. They find it difficult to get orders at workable levels. Some big Hong Kong importers who are facing exim problems are not in the market.

It is learnt that there is good demand for quality upper and lining leathers in the world market. Exporters of leather and leather products who attended the recent Lineapelle leather fair at Milano say that there was a good attendance of customers in it and good volume of business was concluded.

Exporters are pinning high hopes in the Mr. Narendra Modi headed new government with the belief that it will give the necessary support to industrialists to boost their productions and exports. The visit of our Prime Minister to the U.S.A. is also likely to bring good dividends in business collaborations.

Quotations of exporters are at around the following prices:

NOTE FROM MR. SALMAN KHURSHID

Posted on 23:37 by vikash gupta

On Friday, 3 October 2014 11:02 AM, Salman Khurshid <sk_tipu1951@yahoo.com> wrote:

 Dear Friends:

I am writing this missive mainly to those friends from academia and the arts with whom I could not be in close contact over the last five years. Among these friends, a large number are from abroad. Others from India were able to periodically participate on the literary front and encouraged me to intervene and comment on social issues. Many are old family friends and their progeny―particularly those from Germany―who were influenced by my grandfather. A scholar once sent me a rare picture of the house that Zakir Sahib lived in during his student days. Fortuitously, some admirers of Zakir Sahib have had a long life and even as octogenarians remain active. One such remarkable person is the famous political scientist from the University of New York, Prof. Theodore P. Wright who is in his late eighties and who had during his 2001 visit updated Dr Zakir Husain's family tree. This distinguished gentleman worked on an interesting facet of Indian Muslim politics and analyzed those families that survived Partition and contributed to every aspect of national life. I had also come in contact with Justice Javed Iqbal, the illustrious son of Allama Iqbal, who is one of the most progressive thinkers of Islam.
During my days in government it was difficult for me to remain in touch with these distinguished people as they were occupied with doing outstanding work in their respective fields. Conscious of the burdens of an Indian politician in office, they hardly bothered me. I owe a lot to them and wish that they will be good enough to spare time for me as they did in the past. Incidentally, most of them had renewed their ties with our family through the Zakir Husain Study Circle that was established as a dedicated platform to preserve the memory of the first Muslim President of India, symbolizing the greatest strength of our democracy. You might recall that the then Prime Minister Ms Indira Gandhi had staked the fate of her political career to support the candidature of Zakir Sahib for President of India when Kamraj had felt that no Muslim could ever grace this highest office of Indian polity.
The ZHSC has made considerable impact through its annual lectures over ten years by illustrious personalities on some very crucial and vital aspects of Indian life. The Circle is among the few organizations that has had a captive audience of the most eminent people in the city. We hope to enhance the Circle with greater vigour.
Upon relinquishing the charge of the Ministry of External Affairs, I have returned to legal practice but am still trying to find time for my academic work and cultural activities. My book At Home in India will soon be out by Hay House Publications and hopefully performances of my play Sons of Babur will also be revived.
I might mention here that my friend Dr Ather Farouqui—a scholar in his own right—has promised to give more time to the activities that he started, most notably literary/academic events by the ZHSC, although he is now heading the sole nationalist Urdu organization, the Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (Hind), which was saved from the emotional onslaught of Partition by Zakir Sahib and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad with the blessings of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
I look forward to being in touch with old friends and hopefully make new ones. An acknowledgement of this note will be much appreciated.
Yours,
Salman Khurshid

Former Minister of External Affairs

Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India

MAULANA HAFIZ QARI MOHAMMED QASIM ANSARI SAHEB AND HIS QIRATH

Posted on 06:09 by vikash gupta

Maulana Hafiz Qari Mohammad Qasim Ansari sahib's passing away on 13th September 2014 is a great loss to the community and country. As a Qari of international repute he had brought many laurels to our motherland by winning in international Qirat competitions.

Maulana Qasim saheb was born in Bhopal in the year 1957. As a student he showed keen interest in Quran and learnt Quranic Phonetics and the art to recite Quran from "Master of Qaris" Shaikh Qari latheefur Rahman Sahib, Yamani. He also represented India at Makkah and Malasiya in the Years 1980 and 1983 and at several other Qirath meets which had won him great Laurels.

Qari Sahib was a student of Darul uloom,Islamia Arabia, Bhopal. He was an excellent Qrator,Hafiz and Qari, besides that was also former Imam and Khateeb of Perimet mosque which is one of the well known mosques of Tamilnadu.

He was living in Chennai with his family - wife and three children in his flat. Eldest son is Hafiz. He served in the Periamet mosque for about 30 years. His Quranic tafseers given in Periamet mosque have been published by interested people. His qirat was recorded and marketed.

After coming out from the responsibility of the Periamet mosque, he was giving tafseer of Quran in masjids from time to time and attending social functions. He led taraweeh prayers in every Ramadan in Anjuman-e- himayat-e-Islam mosque.
Both in Periamet and Anjuman mosques people gathered in large numbers to pray under him and listen to his recitation which is most attractive in his sweet voice. He had a wonderful memory and his hifz of the holy Quran was perfect beyond any doubt. Moreover his Jumma khuthba was also of much interest to the people. He used to sermon to the point without indulging in any controversy.  He was for unity of the different schools of thought. We miss him miserably.

May his soul rest in peace. Let us all pray for his maghfirath.
